Day Date | Runnymede Sculpture Farm

Our Day Date to Runnymede Sculpture Farm with picnic lunch on a Wednesday was an ideal respite in the middle of the week.  The best part was we didn’t even need to book a sitter!

Recently we were invited to spend the afternoon touring a very unique property here on the San Francisco Peninsula.  The Runnymede Farm is a private estate with the most incredible outdoor sculptural art collection I’ve ever seen.  Driving down Hwy 280, one may never notice this gem of a place amongst the gorgeous rolling hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, but if you look closely, you may just find a peek at one of the more than 100 sculptures that lay beyond.  The land was purchased in 1930 by Alma Spreckels Rosekrans, and named after her father’s prized horse, Runnymede.  Though it is a private estate and not open to the public, there are times when they do open their gates. Adolph Rosekrans, one of the current owners, occasionally allows use for philanthropic events that benefit a few select non-profits.  One dear to him is the San Mateo County Historical Society.  In addition to the meadows and rolling hills dotted with massive shapes of steel, wood, ceramic, and concrete, sits a collection of horse drawn farm equipment dating back to San Mateo County’s farming life in the 1880’s and restored by Adolph himself.  Runnymede is a true California treasure.
