Spring Floral Arrangement

One of my favorite things is having fresh cut flowers around my home.  It’s a little detail that makes a pretty impact.  This is even more important to me now as a work from home mom.  While heading into San Francisco to the Flower Mart provides an abundant variety of florals and greenery to choose from, I just don’t have the time to do that regularly.  Trader Joe’s usually has a good enough supply to bring a fresh spot of beauty into our home.  My favorites are when they have white hydrangea or peonies, swoon! Here’s how to create a simple spring floral arrangement from whatever flowers are available at your local market.

I recently made up a few simple arrangements with supermarket flowers to give as thank you gifts.  Make one for you and one to give away.  These little guys were cut short for pint sized mason jars.I used 5 different types of flowers:  Roses, tulips, freesia, gerber daisies, and alstoemeria.  All in a white or soft pink hue for consistency and that sweet soft look of early spring.

To make arranging flowers simple, first start by sorting and cleaning the stems.  Packaged supermarket flowers, especially tulips are not always cleaned very well.  With a clear vessel like these jars, you want to be sure your water stays clean.  Next, trim extra leaves and rose thorns.  Cut all the stems down to suit your vessel.  I like to arrange in my hand as I go with a firm grip to get a good view of what the arrangement is shaping up like from all angles before putting it in the vase.  These are also the perfect gift to brighten anyone’s day.  Hmmm, has me thinking about Valentine’s Day too!  Enjoy!
