April is busy month in the garden.
The spring bulbs were blooming when we left for spring break and upon our return the bad windy weather we had blew off all of the petals. Sorry, no new photos of 2013 tulips this year sadly. I didn’t get around to taking some pics quickly enough! Here is one from last year.
I decided to finally give it a try and keep my bulbs for next year. I usually end of tossing the bulbs instead of saving them as I can get a little lazy and anxious to get my veggies started. But this year, I thought I’d give it a go and see what happens. Simply pull the tulip, snip off the greens and place them in a bag or basket. Technically you are supposed to fold the greens over and elastic band them for a few weeks before removing them from the ground, but like I said, I can be a bit of a lazy gardener and you know how I like to keep things simple. In colder climates you can keep them in the ground, but here in California, you need to remove them and keep them in a cool dark spot like your garage. Coincidentally as I was placing this year’s bulbs in the garage, I uncovered bulbs from a past year {from who knows when really, because they weren’t from last year}! So now I have 2 year’s worth of tulips to plant next fall. When it comes to tulips it truly is the more the merrier. En masse at it’s best! Plus, it’ll be such a fun surprise to see what color tulips come up next spring.
Now that the tulips have been pulled, it’s time to get the vegetable garden ready for it’s best season!
