Exploring Isla Espíritu Santo
Our days exploring Isla Espírito Santo were spent hiking, snorkeling, swimming, paddle boarding, and looking for all the birds and sea life we could. Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez “the world’s aquarium.” We looked forward to seeing it all for ourselves.
Hiking around the island we found cactus, crabs, sea urchins and even an animal skull. The kids loved searching for the animal and sea life. One hike took us to the other side of the island where the wind was whipping around fiercely. My middle one is not a big fan of crabs and did not like big brother pointing out that their were tons of tiny crabs crawling across the trail!
Other days we spent mostly on the water. Baja Expeditions provided a boat and guide to take us to the different bays around the island. Each bay was known for a different type of sea life or flock of birds. We were lucky enough to witness a huge Osprey nest and a few Blue Footed Boobies.
We all loved the snorkeling the best. When we were visiting, the weather was a bit unseasonably cool, but the water was warm and very clear, perfect for snorkeling. We saw so many colorful fish, sea urchins, and a type of Manta Ray that literally flew when on the surface of the water!
Isla Espíritu Santo was an adventure that felt like a million miles from home and yet only a quick flight from San Francisco. Baja Expeditions took great care of us. They were incredibly knowledgable about the area and prepared delicious meals for us during our stay.
