Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

A yearning for the sea inspired an outing with the kids to Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.  We love ourselves a good day trip in this family that is for sure.  An easy beautiful drive to the coast landed us at the marine reserve just north of Half Moon Bay near Moss Beach.  The best time to go is when you will overlap with a low tide period.  You can look up the tidal schedule before you go to be sure the tide pools will be exposed during your visit.  It’s best to go within an hour of the lowest tide of the day.

We like to bring a picnic and a blanket with us as well as plenty of water.  There are picnic tables and restrooms at the parking lot before you walk down the hill to the tide pools.  There is also a small nature center with brochures to help you with self-guided tours.  You may find a ranger or naturalist to answer questions too.  The day we were there, many harbor seals were visiting with their young pups.  The naturalists had telescopes set up so you could get a close up view without disturbing them and their new babies.

What are your family’s favorite ways to spend a day together?
