June Garden

We came home from our Family Vacation to a garden bursting with new growth. It always amazes me how fast the garden can take off in a week’s time when the weather heats up. In Northern CA, June is often fogged in so one never knows when it will heat up! With warm temps and the help of a trusty automatic soaker hose, our summer garden is in full force.

My family’s fav – tomatoes!

Sweet 100s
Sungolds

Tomatoes are so easy to grow. All you need is a sunny spot. Raised beds are best, but even a large pot or container will do. For fast growing varieties choose Cherry and Sungold varieties . Early Girls are also a good option for a mid-sized red salad tomato. They are typically ready to harvest in about 60 days. If you are new to growing tomatoes, I’d suggest you start with these fool-proof varieties and plant from seedling. The planting dates will vary by region and climate. I planted mine in Northern California this year in mid-May, but sometimes can plant as early as mid-April. Last year was a late, wet spring therefore I didn’t plant until Memorial Day. A family vegetable garden is worth it’s up front effort to yield so much fun and simple pleasures throughout the summer and early fall. It’s one of my greatest pleasures to watch my little ones pluck cherry tomatoes off the vine and eat them like candy! The edible garden – Simply beautiful.
