Elk Horn Slough

We had a terrific day out exploring part of the Monterey Bay recently.  Elk horn Slough is an inlet and series tidal creeks and salt marshes at the center of Monterey Bay.  We decided the best way to get the most out of this afternoon was to get right on the water.  We reserved a kayak tour with Monterey Bay Kayaks for a guided tour of the slough.  Monterey Bay Kayaks is located in Moss Landing about 25 minutes south of Santa Cruz or 25 minutes north of Monterey.

We met our amazing guide, Katie after checking in to get suited up.  They have everything you need for a day out on the water.  You can opt to wear one of their wetsuits or paddle gear including jackets and pants to be sure you stay warm and dry.  After a quick instruction we were right on the water.  I was blown away at the amount of wildlife we were able to get up close and personal with during our paddle.  We immediately saw dozens of seals, several sea otters, tons of huge pelicans, a dock full of sea lions, blue herons, and of course seagulls.  We were delighted each time an otter popped up near our kayaks.  We also saw anemone, sea hares, and sand dollars.  It was truly a special day so unbelievably close to nature.  We can’t wait to try their other location at the Monterey Harbor.

Some logistics that might help with planning your trip to Monterey Bay Kayaks:

– bring sunscreen and a hat

– wear a bathing suit under your clothes in case you may want to use one of their wetsuits

– our kids are 11, 8 and 5.  we took out 2 double kayaks.  I was in one with my 11 year old.  my husband was in the other with my 8 year old paddling in front and our 5 year old in the middle seat not paddling.

– bring water

– bring a waterproof camera case like life proof

– wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.

– ask for Katie Monroe.  Her enthusiasm made our experience even better!

More day trips in and around the Bay Area like berry picking, tide pooling, and museum going in our SanFrancisco section.
