Camp Care Package

Summer Camp Care Packages titleIt’s unclear if sending my kids a camp care package is in their best interest or mine.  As I carefully thought about what they would most like in a care package they’ll receive while away for a week at camp, I wonder…Is this more for me or them?  This is the 4th year for my son and the 3rd year for my daughter that they will be going away for the week.  Is the care package I’m pouring my heart into really needed?  They are so happy and comfortable at this special place that I’m sure they hardly need any comforts from home.  It occurred to me these packages weren’t for them, they are for me!

These thoughtful gifts and treats are my way of sending them all the special in between moments we share when we are together, off to camp.  A piece of candy for each kiss good night, a love note instead of a bedtime story, a journal to replace our morning talks over breakfast together, a silly book in place of a tickle fest or a fun activity to share with cabin mates when I can’t be there to play.

These little packages are more about me sending a piece of me to camp with them, than my kids needing a piece of home for themselves.  Unconsciously, all along, instead of worrying about their little hearts, I’ve been packing up my heart to send along with them on their week away from me.
