Boating and Fishing on Convict Lake in the Eastern Sierra

Another gorgeous morning in the Eastern Sierra! We began our day with coffee and pastries at Schat’s Bakery. That place is off the rails crazy good. We packed a picnic and headed up to Convict Lake where we’d rent a boat for the day.

Fishing poles and gear in hand, the cutest dog there ever was and a mountain sized lunch, we hopped aboard our boat for the day. We cruised around the lake a bit looking for a good spot to drop our lines. Shut out! Again! Unless you count when my husband hooked my hand on his line – ouch!

  • fishing gear
  • sunscreen
  • lunch and lots of water
  • patience

It is about a 20 minute drive from Mammoth to Convict Lake. Yes, it does get it’s name from somewhat of a sordid incident with some prison escapees, but that was way back in the wild west of the late 1800s. Not to worry, today, it’s nothing more than another peaceful beautiful lake in the Mammoth region.

Set out in the morning, take a stroll around the lake or rent a boat for the day. If you prefer, you can also stay in one of the cute little cabins at the Convict Lake Resort. We didn’t try the restaurant at the resort, but it looked great. The store is fully stocked with everything you could need for a day on the lake or to take home a memory.

We will definitely be back here to spend more than a day. The Eastern Sierra has so much to offer families, from ghost towns to fishing, from hiking to relaxing. A gorgeous vista is around every corner.
